This morning I phoned in and took part very briefly in the Call Kaye programme on Radio Scotland. The subject was a pronouncement from Cardinal Keith O'Brien describing plans to allow same sex marriage as grotesque and as morally questionable as reintroducing slavery. See this report in The Independent.

I challenged John Deighan (Parliamentary Officer for the Catholic Parliamentary Office in Scotland) about his repeated claims to have 'evidence' about the ills that befall homosexual people because of their 'choices'. This claim has been made before and you may recall I have questioned (refuted? - decide for yourself) it in some previous blogs.

Cold hard look at the evidence - an introduction

Mr Deighan claimed that the information he had previously sent me was just 'initial evidence' (whatever that means), and said he has ten pieces of research evidence to support his assertion. He invited me to contact his office whereupon he would send me this. I emailed him this morning and await this 'new' information with interest. If and when I get it I will of course have a close look at it and report on what the evidence says here.

Since I called in I have been kicking myself a bit about not getting my message over well about how disconnected the Catholic Church is from reality (not to mention truth) on this subject. I am afraid I rather got caught up in (okay, annoyed by) the narrower point about false claims about evidence being regurgitated by those speaking on behalf of the RC church.

Thankfully, others were much clearer. Tom French from the Equality Network came across really well, quietly challenging the irrational assumptions underlying the things John Deighan was saying with good humour and common sense. But for me the star turn of the programme was one of the last people who called in. A bloke called Ralph from Maryhill in Glasgow (1 hour 3 minutes and 32 seconds in to the programme), who explained that he is a Catholic, that he has five children, and that he would love any one of them every bit as much if they were gay. He reckoned that his church is wrong and out of step with reality in its views on same sex marriage and it was about time they changed. As he said, "wake up and get with the times." Go Ralph

Edited to add: John Deighan has sent through the research references. I am now reading through these and will publish a critical analysis in due course.
