Around 20 years ago, you could hear the whimpers of HIV-denialism being soundly driven into rout. Denialism of HIV usually took the form of denying that the HIV virus causes AIDS. Even though I often blog on health matters, and my Twitter circles include many scientists and medicos, I haven't heard any real HIV denialism except that reported from places such as South Africa (where political leaders had given a huge boost to denialism). It kills. People died needlessly, many, because of such denialism.

And now it's been resurrected. By what is supposed to be a relatively science-savvy magazine, VICE UK (@vice and @ViceUK). This article here, written by @garethmay. It bowdlerizes HIV denialism as "dissent", and that despite that most denialist claims were roundly disproven already almost 20 years ago. Denialism kills. This kind of article will kill people. It has happened before in Britain - as Wikipedia notes, there was a magazine called Continuum, dedicated to pseudo-scientific HIV-denialist claptrap. The magazine ceased publication in 2001, after all its editors had died of AIDS-related conditions.

HIV denialism kills. Don't let @VICE get away with such immoral clickbait articles.

Old but good article debunking HIV-denialism (via @vonOberst).

    pseudo-scientific claptrap indeed

Amazing, where were these people in the last 20 years?

    Some facts:

    - 4th generation HIV Elisa not only detect antibodies but also p24 HIV antigen. Not yet as frequently used in the USA as in Europe.
    - PCR technique detects HIV RNA (and not antibodies)
    - yes, there are false reactives in every test and some can be caused by an immune reaction, for example caused by a recent vaccination. This is known and taken into consideration by the medical docs.
    - the result of a single test is never communicated to the patient but followed up by a strictly regulated procedure of follow-up tests, including different techniques like PCR.

A test result does not equal a diagnosis.

And that's just on the issue of diagnostics...
