Earlier this year former Scottish First Minister and plain old Jack McConnell became Baron McConnell of Glenscorrodale.

Jack McConnell, before he became a Lawd.....

and after.

(Answers on a postcard please as to which outfit is more ridiculous.)

When I heard about oor Jack taking a title I was reminded of this verse and chorus from the song ‘In Recognition’ by the Proclaimers

In Recognition of your service to the working class
In Recognition of your party loyalty
You get an ermine robe and you declare when you are probed
You only took it so the missus would be pleased

In spite of all your claims
It looks like you’re just the same
As every other clown, who likes put the crown
Before or after their names.

But "hey" I thought, to be fair that is the system we have, and if Jack was going to work hard and try to do a good job while down there in 'The Hoose of Lawds', I could just about live with it.

However, an article in the Sunday Herald (by that fella Tom Gordon again) reveals that the Greedy Red Baron has continued to collect his salary as an MSP (and a pretty handsome pension as former First Minister) as well as £30,000 a year from his ‘second job’ doon sooth.

If he were my constituency MSP I would be wondering whether he could devote an appropriate amount of time, care and attention to the important issues affecting the people of Motherwell and Wishaw, while lording it around in London.

It has been estimated that his Lordship will have been abstracted from his work as an MSP for as much as eight working weeks.

How many other professions would accept somebody being away from their work for this period of time, doing another job, yet still collecting their wages?

I cannot think of an example in any other walk of life, where the individual would not be taken to task and told, you cannot do that or you will be subject to disciplinary action. Which all begs the question.

Where is the accountability?

I also find myself wondering if Jack remembers the reasons that he chose to become a member of the Labour party.

In the words of another, earlier Scottish poet...

Ye see yon birkie ca'd 'a lord,'
Wha struts, an' stares, an' a' that?
Tho' hundreds worship at his word,
He's but a cuif for a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
His ribband, star, an' a' that,
The man o' independent mind,
He looks an' laughs at a' that.

Second homes, second jobs ..... there seems to be a bit of a pattern here. Politicians more interested in self aggrandisement and pecuniary advantage than in serving the people.

Just as disturbing however, is the fact that our collective apathy is letting them get away with it.

I think I am going to have to lay off blogging about Scottish politics for a while. The waves of nausea are becoming too much to bear.
