"Self-harm (SH) or deliberate self-harm (DSH) includes self-injury (SI) and self-poisoning and is defined as the intentional, direct injuring of body tissue without suicidal intent."
(source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-harm)

Self harm seems to be a growing problem amongst humans, and popular in "emo" culture (just don't even get me started on that) but we do not often realize that it is not just humans that commit SH.

Self-injurious behaviour in animals is a well-established, although not a widely known phenomenon. Cases of self harm have been reported in many species including monkeys, cats, dogs, horses and birds. Many of these acts of SH take place under zoo and laboratory conditions. For example, monkeys that are kept in laboratory conditions, in small cages with little enrichment or variety in their lives often end up spinning endlessly in their cages, rocking back and forth and mutilating themselves. Some monkeys will bite at their own limbs and tear out clumps of their own hair because of the trauma of being used basically as living, breathing test tubes, in experiments that cause severe distress to the animal involved.

For example, a PETA undercover investigation at Columbia University revealed that metal pipes had been surgically implanted into the skulls of rhesus monkeys in order to induce stress for a study of the connection between stress and the menstrual cycle. The animals were given nothing but an aspirin after the anesthetics wore off.

PETA's investigator was hired by Covance from April 26, 2004, to March 11, 2005 as a technician and worked inside the company's primate testing lab in Vienna, Virginia. Examples of things witnessed:

*Striking and choking "uncooperative" monkeys
*Screaming curses at frightened, sick monkeys
*Slamming monkeys into their cages after they've had dosing tubes rammed down their throats
*Hosing down cages with monkeys still inside, soaking the animals
*A loose monkey terrorized by a technician who slams cages into walls to scare the animal out of hiding
*Monkeys with chronic rectal prolapses-painful protrusions of the intestines through the rectum-resulting from constant stress and diarrhea
*Monkeys who died horribly in tests for a drug company-the veterinarian was forbidden to examine them or provide any treatment, including euthanasia
*Small monkeys dosed with large tubes forced up their nostrils and down into their stomachs, causing choking, gagging, and daily bloody noses
*Injuries left untreated until they became necrotic
*Nonstop blaring rock music

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! Yes...I warned you again.
