In memoriam W. Newell Hendricks (1943-2015)

The group from Nicaragua arrived in Boston in early September of 2001 and was with us during the September 11 terror attacks. For most, if not all of them it had been the first trip on an airplane. While everybody tried to keep calm, you could tell how scared they were the first couple of days post 9/11. No planes were flying and many wondered, if they would be able to return home as planned. Others were scared of the destructive

Without her environments realizing it, a poet’s education starts early in life. For a white child growing in to her power of language within white discourse this will naturally be very different from a Black child fending for herself in the projects.

Most of the poetry the white child will read for many years, when poetry is both sustenance

(This is a 90 page report, but an interesting read... and deja vu-ish)

"The Project for the New American Century was established in the spring of 1997. From its inception, the Project has been concerned with the decline in the strength of America’s defenses, and in the problems this would create for the exercise of American leadership around the globe and, ultimately, for the preservation

Cheney knows...

Posted 15-Sep-2011 at 07:20 AM (07:20) by Peregrinus,7...121354,00.html

From the article:

Israel is likely to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities if it proves necessary in order to prevent it from acquiring Weapons of Mass Destruction, former Vice President Dick Cheney told US-based independent news site Newsmax.

“I think Iran represents an existential threat, and (Israel) will do whatever they have to do to guarantee their survival and their security,” the former vice...

9/11 - the USA and beyond, as in Pakistan

9/11 was marked today in the USA by a minutes' silence and, in New York City, sirens, and a remembrance ceremony at Ground Zero. Pakistan managed to officially send its support through its Foreign Ministry to the USA, also pointing out that Pakistan itself remains very much a victim of Islamist terrorism. And so it does; in the years between 2001 and now, Pakistan has suffered over 10,000 dead in that struggle.

And only a short while back the son of Salmaan Taseer, Shahbaz Taseer, was kidnapped in Pakistan;...

Anders Behring Breivik, the problem of evil, the demonization of the mentally ill, medicine, science and ethics

As people struggle to cope with Breivik's deeds, they often call him "deranged" and "insane", which is simply wrong, unscientific empty name-calling, and adds to the demonization of the actual mentally ill - most of whom will never hurt anyone but themselves if anyone. Most of us can agree that Breivik is evil, but evil is a very loose concept, often misused by people, adding to the confusion. Many of us can agree that there is no point in describing natural events or sheer randomicity as evil;...

Values, ethics, art, 9/11, Polanski and Brooke Shields: justice delayed is still justice; justice trumps exploitation posing as art and free speech

I'm really pissed off. The apologetics I've seen around the net for Polanski are disgusting. The man drugged and committed statutory rape on a thirteen-year-old, fer crissakes, and on reading her testimony, implicit coercion seems to have been there as well (though Polanski plea-bargained the charge down to "unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor"). Polanski became a fugitive from justice, and now some are whining that he should be free from extradition and prosecution merely because he was so...
