Evolutionary Forecasting. Because your money AND your life.

Evolutionary forecasting is the new name given to predicting what genetic changes might happen to a whole population. So it's looking at how statistically a total population changes, at what bundle of traits might change with respect to the percent of each trait, and at what new traits might come into being, and what other traits might die out. Is it important? Only if both your money and your life matter to you!

In the years 1918 to 1921, no less than at least 50 million people died...

As ever, the best around the web that I find. Late (this should have appeared last night), but hey, by now I guess you expect me to be a trifle late. Better than being premature. You can see my other weekly blogs round-ups here.

Science: I don't know if you remember my blog post a while back about rats in pants, but now they have portable, minaturized PET scanners for pets, whoops, mistake, sorry, I mean PET scanners for lab rats. It's science, Jim.

My weekly blogs round-up, on science and society and, well, everything. This time round including as much info as possible so you can see how to garner info yourself, giving Twitter handles and so on, and a fair few press reports.

Science, nature conservation, ecology:
Some good news at very long last (with thanks, h/t to @geostuff for the alert): "Tiger Numbers Increase in India". And while on the animal/nature conservation front, the Scientific American blogs have a guest post up...

Last week I was too ill to do the weekly blogs round-up, so this one is going to be a bit bigger than usual. As ever, the best around the web on the issues that affect us all, the issues of interest. I have a backlog of a million more links I would like to cite here, but just to make sure I get this damned and damnable thing out on time, I will leave it as it now is and maybe do a follow-up addition in a new blog post.

Society + Science Weekly blogs round-up - 27/28 February 2011 - science, culture, philosophy, religion, atheism

This is my usual weekly blogs round-up, marked off for Sunday/Monday. I considered how I may not be making clear what the blogs round-up is all about, thinking it would be self-evident, so I am making it more immediately clear: this regular blogs round-up is all about culture, science, mind, history, religion, atheism and philosophy. I am titling it so so as to make that clear. Every week emphasis is random; this particular week, this one is very heavy on the science, with not so much on religion...

Bumper weekly blogs round-up - 20/21 February 2011

This is a bumper round-up of blog posts for this week, since owing to illness I could not do one last week. This time round I've added small headings (in dark green) for entries to help reading this. Subjects as ever are science, philosophy, atheism, religion, humanism, history, literature, and, basically, anything that strikes my fancy. I have a broad fancy. I'm still as sick as a very dead brown dog, so please excuse this round-up coming late in on Monday evening.

Sunday/Monday blogs round-up - 10/11 October 2010

Posted 11-Oct-2010 at 10:22 AM (10:22) by Gurdur (Stranger In An Even Stranger Land)

As ever, ten blog posts (or topics with more than one blog post on them) found to have been posted in the last week or so, in the wider blogosphere. All quite random - keep in mind, I may totally disagree with any one blog post mentioned here, but I felt it worthy of mention for whatever reason.

Normally I would never put in a Hub blog here, just so as not to be too insular. But this one is very important - Lifelinking's blog on, "What it means to be a King, and what a Humanist expects...

When nature trumps nurture: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), a new animal model using the Slitrk5 gene, compared with a different transgenic model looking at glutamatergic excitation

So we've looked a little bit at what that vague label "mental illness" means or doesn't mean, and we've so far had now one case-study in this blog of one specific study showing which personality disorders are influenced by problem parental behaviours, and which ones are not. We learnt from that that something like Wikipedia link for Avoidant Personality Disorder Avoidant Personality Disorder (AvPD; also known as Anxious Personality Disorder) seems to be both nature and nurture, in that there is a high baseline for it (i.e. it seems more people...

The kohanim; interview with Jack Cohen and Ian Stewart on the kohanim and genetics

Well, for the last week I had to fight off a very nasty sinusitis infection, which meant no blog posts at all, but I did get in some work done on the Hub templates for the blogs. However, it means I have a huge backlog of blog and Hub board posts to do, and I can only start doing them slowly. Part of that backlog is a series of videos I took at the DiscWorld Convention in 2008; I promised Unbeliever to put up some vids, and hadn't done it so far, so I will start doing them one by one. A special...
