Gamification of human society has gone on a lot longer than you might think. There is the ancient game of chess, which came to to the West via Persia (checkmate, IIRC, comes from shah-mak, meaning death of the Shah). Chess, which has Chinese (象棋, Xingq) and Japanese (将棋, shōgi) forms as well, models both human society and ritualized warfare. Much more ancient is the game of Go ( 囲碁, igo). I was fascinated by a blog post by Mark Brunson on St. Paul, and how Paul and his later supporters took over Christianity, and turned it into something quite different to what it had started out as. Mark Brunson's post (on his blog "Enough About Me: An Autobiography") is well-worth reading, and many thanks to MadPriest for the alert on that one.
