Where Do They Get Those Original Ideas?

Posted 29-Jan-2008 at 01:00 AM (01:00) by philian
Updated 29-Jan-2008 at 01:51 AM (01:51) by philian

[NOTE: This was something I posted to my other blog, but thought it would also be interesting here. I don't believe in spamming or shameless plugging, so if you would like to see my other blog you'll have to ask me where it is]

It started out innocently enough. Several years ago the Sci Fi Channel aired a remake of Battlestar Galactica. It was originally intended just to be a miniseries. Now the show is about to enter into its’ third season, and has been called the best drama on...

To Blog or Not To Blog

Posted 29-Jan-2008 at 12:51 AM (00:51) by philian
Updated 29-Jan-2008 at 01:51 AM (01:51) by philian

Normally maintaining a blog is pretty straight forward. You have a blog on a particular subject, you have something to say on that subject, you make a post. Simple, right?

This blog is a little different though. This is a blog attached to a forum. So I have to consider everything I post. Would it be better said here, where I pretty much have free reign, and replies are reactionary? Or do I post in the forum, which then opens up the post to public debate?

I guess another...

The Romans Are Still Messing With Us

Posted 20-Dec-2007 at 04:28 PM (16:28) by philian

OK, that is two Romans in particular: Julius and Augustus. These two decided, for some reason, that the best way to immortalize themselves was to have a month named after them. Thus we have July and August. That's all fine and well. More power to them. I'm not really concerned about that. In fact, I'm so concerned about it, I didn't even bother to see if this was true, or just a weird coincidence that spawned yet another urban legend. It's not July or August that I have a problem with. It's the...

Phrases That Annoy Me

Posted 17-Dec-2007 at 04:52 PM (16:52) by philian

Today I thought I would do a fun little topic. That is phrases that people commonly use that kind of annoy me for one reason or another.

The first one I'd like to start with is this one: Everything in moderation. This can be directly compared to the "jumbo shrimp" oxymoron. It implies an excess of moderation. The phrase is rather self contradictory.

Another phrase that I have issues with: You'll probably be late to your own funeral. The problem is this is...

Take A Day Off For The Environment

Posted 14-Dec-2007 at 04:38 PM (16:38) by philian

For years I've been hearing people talking about alternatives to the five day/40 hour work week. A very common one that gets bandied about is working 4 10s. That is you work for four days, a ten hour shift each, then get three days off. This would be nice if you can handle a ten hour day. I think most people could once they got used to it, and the bonus of having three day weekends would make it worth while.

Of course, I have to point out the I already work nine hour days, and I like...

Is Anyone Reading This?

Posted 13-Dec-2007 at 04:40 PM (16:40) by philian
Updated 13-Dec-2007 at 04:47 PM (16:47) by philian

First of all, it doesn't really matter. I'd like to think that some one is reading this blog. And that, maybe, I've influenced some one in some way. No one seems to be leaving comments (except for the one from Gurdur). Perhaps everyone reading this blog is the silent type.

So why am I keeping a blog if no one is reading it? Well, let me tell you a story. I have another blog, that I admittedly don't post to as often as I should. My other blog deals with the gaming industry. My supervisor...

Speak English! Or Should We?

Posted 12-Dec-2007 at 04:43 PM (16:43) by philian

There's a movement in the US to make English the official language. Part of the agenda is to pass a law requiring anyone who wishes to live here to learn English. Of course, for any society to function properly its members need to be able to communicate with each other. But that's as far as I go in agreeing with this idea.

Like the wheel, or the computer, or the automobile, language is a tool. And, like any other tool, it was created by humans to serve a specific purpose; that is...

My Fall Out With IIDB

Posted 11-Dec-2007 at 05:31 PM (17:31) by philian
Updated 11-Dec-2007 at 05:41 PM (17:41) by philian

On the surface it seemed like any other day. I went into work, started up my laptop, and proceeded to check my e-mail, and browse my usual forums. I checked my favorite thread at IIDB first, that being the picture captioning contest (can't remember what the thread was called). I found that my caption on the last picture had been chosen, meaning that I got to post the next picture. I found a cute picture of a puppy sitting in a truck with the label "Security" on the side. and proceeded...

The Atheist Image

Posted 10-Dec-2007 at 04:34 PM (16:34) by philian
Updated 11-Dec-2007 at 04:52 PM (16:52) by philian

This is one of the biggest problems facing atheists, and other secularists today. We have a very bad public image. The image of an atheist is a bitter, hateful person who wants to stamp out all forms of religion, or an arrogant, stuffy scientist looking down his nose at the rest of us "mere mortals." Admittedly, many of these images are created by the religious to make us look bad.

However, we haven't done a lot to help the matter. Sure, there's the Out Campaign that Richard...

My Beef With The Multiverse

Posted 08-Dec-2007 at 06:21 PM (18:21) by philian
Updated 09-Dec-2007 at 05:10 AM (05:10) by philian (Changing the category)

OK, I know that what I'm talking about, technically, isn't called the multiverse, but I needed a catchy title.

Anyway, here's the theory: When a decision is made that could go one of two or more ways, all decisions are in fact made, splitting into multiple similar realities. To give a very simplistic example, If I go up to a pop machine and need to decide if I want a Pepsi or a Sprite. Up to the point where I actually make my decision, it's one reality. At the exact point where I...

Why Am I Here?

Posted 08-Dec-2007 at 05:42 PM (17:42) by philian
Updated 09-Dec-2007 at 05:10 AM (05:10) by philian (Changing the category)

No this isn't about the philosophical "why am I here" question. This post is all about why I am here at the Hub, and what I hope to accomplish.

First, some background. Like many, i came here from IIDB. I'll get into that mess in a later post. But that was my home on the net for years. As it happens, I live in the northwest bible belt of the US. So I have to turn to the internet to find like minded people. For a while I was browsing the Heathen Hangout and Richard Dawkins...

My Philosophy

Posted 07-Dec-2007 at 03:41 PM (15:41) by philian
Updated 09-Dec-2007 at 05:10 AM (05:10) by philian (Changing the category)

Yesterday I gave a brief introduction of myself, explaining a little about my beliefs, and my background. Today I'll present some of my values and philosophies. Of course, like many things, this tends to change over time. But I think the core ideas tend to stay.

Although I really don't know a whole lot about humanism, I've been told by those who apparently know that my values are very similar. My values are heavily influenced by Epicurus, and, as I stated in my profile, I consider...

Introduction: reduex

Posted 07-Dec-2007 at 05:49 AM (05:49) by philian
Updated 09-Dec-2007 at 05:11 AM (05:11) by philian (Changing the category)

I made a post this morning, but there was a bit of a glitch in the system, and that post disappeared into the aether. Gurdur was very apologetic about this, but it isn't really a big deal

So I'll recap what was in the post. It was basically an introduction. I know there were two main points that I made.

First, where my beliefs stand. I am an atheist. I do however accept that there may be gods or other "woo" stuff out there. However, and I have to make...
