The Garissa terrorism attack by Al-Shabaab in Kenya, and its context

Posted 08-Apr-2015 at 03:23 PM (15:23) by Gurdur (Stranger In An Even Stranger Land)

Six days ago, Al Shabaab gunmen entered Garissa University and murdered at least 148 people. The initial death toll was reported as 147, thus the hashtag #147NotJustANumber, which was created by Kenyans to honor the murder victims. I was recently alerted to the fact that David Fanshawe, ethnomusicologist and composer, had died fairly recently, on Monday July 05 2010, aged 68 years old, following a stroke. Fanshawe is most famous for composing "African Sanctus", released in 1972, a piece composed partly using recordings Fanshawe had made in Egypt, the Sudan, Uganda and Kenya, on a journey up the Nile from the Mediterranean to one of the Nile's sources, Lake Victoria.
