Oliver Sacks is a renowned neurologist and psychiatrist who has written quite a lot of books on neurology in various topics. He has a web site and blog of his own, if you ever feel like reading more. One of his books, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat" (USA edition, British edition), contains the short true story, "Cupid's Disease", in which Sacks describes how an elderly woman presented herself at his practice, and told him she was much more alert and vivacious than usual.

One day, I was in the large kitchen/dining area of the hostel, staring moodily at my coffee, when another bloke sidled up to me, we'll call this other bloke Bruce (not his real name; he later turned out to be a rather nasty bit of work, but that has nothing to do with this story, this story, by the way, being true in every detail). Bruce said to me, in a rather peculiar kind of hoarse whisperish way, despite there...

Nosology: because it will get ya if you don't know it. Essential for atheism, religion, theology, medicine and life

Don't be fooled by the word nosology; it has nothing to do with noses. It is, in fact, the science or philosophy or the black arts (and we'll see in succeeding blog posts just how fuzzy the boundaries can get sometimes) of how you classify and categorize diseases. I'm going to be doing quite a few blog posts on this subject, over a long time to come. In this mini-series, I'll be mainly talking about diseases -- the categorization of diseases -- though occasionally I'll touch on how we categorize...
