Pain is a very damned complex thing, and it's not at all well understood. Pain can result from damage to the body, and it can occur without any damage to the body at all. There is the case of phantom-limb pain, where the sufferer experiences pain as coming from a particular limb, but that limb has long since been amputated - the treatment for that disorder is one of the things that made the neurologist Vilayanur S.
