Puerto Rico: Police Brutality

Updated 05-Jul-2010 at 05:41 AM (05:41) by Fizzle

The events that are currently stirring a storm in my country do not occur in a vacuum; such things never do. For decades, the political baton has been passed between the New Progressive Party, the one currently in power, and the Popular Democratic Party. The first is a pro statehood party and the second is currently divided in vis a vis our political status. During their terms, wrongs...

Puerto Rico: After the UPR Student's Strike

Posted 01-Jul-2010 at 02:44 AM (02:44) by Fizzle (Look to Windward)
Updated 01-Jul-2010 at 07:33 AM (07:33) by Fizzle

"Let the world know that the current administration in Puerto Rico denies liberty of press. Let the world know that average citizens cannot enter their own legislative sessions. Let the world know that they cannot protest peacefully without taking a shot of pepper spray or a blow to the head. LET THE WORLD KNOW."

Riot Police form a line in front of the main gate

As I mentioned on my previous post (note:that post was a terse overview of a tersely summarized first 23 days), the plolice are under orders to prevent the entry of people, food and water to the UPR Rio Piedras Campus (UPRRP or RP for short). This has caused several incidents...

UPR on Strike: Overview

For most of you who don't know and those who do, I am an undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Due to the threats of budget cuts, unfair and unjustified modifications to tuition wavers, threats of increasing tuition fees and a clearly antagonistic slashing of funds for the University (not a budget cut; a peculiar cut to the source of the budget),...

Thinking Aloud: Secular Humanism & Atheist Boards (post expansion; I submit for your review, feedback, critiques)

Posted 27-Feb-2010 at 07:53 PM (19:53) by Fizzle (Look to Windward)
Updated 14-Mar-2010 at 04:15 AM (04:15) by Gurdur

I have been thinking, on and off, about the importance of a secular humanist board instead of just an atheist board. An atheist board alone seems to lack any particular direction in terms of productivity and, perhaps, activism. Notice that the RDF was known as an atheist board but this classification was still second or equal to that of a science and reason board.

Those boards were about science...

On Writing: Ambiguity and Precision in Social Commentary

Posted 31-Jan-2010 at 06:16 PM (18:16) by Fizzle (Look to Windward)
Updated 26-Feb-2010 at 01:16 PM (13:16) by Fizzle

Social commentary is, as the name implies, the practice of actively voicing one's thoughts on elements of society. It is the act of demanding change, it is the act of preventing change, of demanding justice and of promoting injustice. In short, it is voicing one's thoughts on the state of society and what should be done with it.

Over the course of human history, this has been done through...

Thinking out loud about charity

Posted 20-Jan-2010 at 06:47 AM (06:47) by Fizzle (Look to Windward)

Due to the recent tragedy in Haiti, I've been thinking again about charities, helping out others, social problems and so on. It's been a while since I've thought about this but my opinion has not changed. I'm still not that crazy about charities. Don't get me wrong, I understand that charities really do help, but if a charity has been actively working somewhere for a long time, what does that tell you? Doesn't it say that there's something missing? Doesn't it say that there is more to be done?...

The Rival Factions, Part II

Posted 05-Jan-2010 at 09:11 AM (09:11) by Fizzle (Look to Windward)

He conquers who endures - Persius

Gaul has mostly fallen to the Scipii, as the Greeks have fallen to us, the Julii. The Gauls last great stronghold was our lost city of Tarquinii, which the Scipii now hold, along with Ancona and Salona. After they're attempt at making a protectorate out of our capital, Bovianum, the Senate outlawed both our families.

We attacked and took Dyrrachium and Apollonia from the Scipii while, to the southwest we took the island city of Messana,...

Taking Bovianum, and near disaster

This blasted post should be my SECOND entry but the damn blog thingy saved it as a draft and doesn't let me shift anything around. Oy. Go here for the next entry.
-----------------------
Armed forces abroad are of little value unless there is prudent counsel at home.- Cicero

After conquering Tarquinii, our forces were elated, our spirits uplifted to heights immeasurable. Thus, as true Sons of Mars, we sought even more; we set our sights on the Greek city of Bovianum,...

The Rival Factions

Posted 03-Jan-2010 at 09:20 PM (21:20) by Fizzle (Look to Windward)

As I mentioned in the first post, I didn't make records of each battle, so I'll be skipping around for quite a bit.
---------------------
The Greek Cities, before being eliminated by us, the Julii, helped destroy Thrace. The fate of Thrace was mostly due to the Scipii, those mock Romans who nevertheless are able to do away with lesser cultures.

At this moment, Gaul is being systematically reduced by the expanding Scipii, while the Rebel factions have offered an alliance...

Tarquinii revisited

Posted 03-Jan-2010 at 09:01 PM (21:01) by Fizzle (Look to Windward)

See my second entry for more on Tarquinii.
--------------------
To blunder twice is not allowed in war - Latin proverb

Having repelled an army of Rebels from the gates of Bovianum, our army marched on to Tarentum. The city, choked by our naval blockade and our formidable military presence, fell quickly. What was left of their army was trampled by our soldiers; no unit was routed and no unit was left.

Having need of growth, we enslaved the population and...

Hastati are light infantry units; means they are on foot with swords or small spears. In this case, they first throw spears and after they exhaust these missiles, they charge.

Triarii are spearmen by excellence. They are especially useful against cavalry, which means that they are often indispensable units to have.

Equites are, as you might suspect, cavalry. My favorite units, since the easily outmaneuver units on foot, and are thus excellent for attacking the enemy...

Taking Tarquinii

Posted 02-Jan-2010 at 05:36 AM (05:36) by Fizzle (Look to Windward)
Updated 03-Jan-2010 at 11:26 PM (23:26) by Fizzle

See here for the intro to this post.

In the beginning of the prologue, you aid the Senate or Senatus Populusque Romanus (SPQR) in a battle repelling the Gauls (as the Roman Julii, one of the three Roman families), after which you must conquer the city of Tarquinii.
---------------------------------

Timidi mater non flet (A coward's mother does not weep) - Latin proverb

Having successfully repelled the Gauls, we moved on to our first conquest: Tarquinii....

Rome Total War: The Prologue

Here's the wiki article for the game, for extra info.

Before you can get to what I term the Grand Imperial Campaign*, you must complete the Prologue Campaign. This consists of basically conquering every damn thing on the boot of Italy and a couple of bordering areas and thereby repelling all non-Roman entities from the area.

Since I was a complete newbie, I just finished the campaign without chronicling anything, which is a pity since I wanted to do a series...

Ho-ly shit. Notice that this was written in 1920

Quote:
When a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is the fact that they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save the most elemental — men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or be lost... All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically,

And I'm glad. I'm not spamming, but I decided to make a blog post because I wasn't sure if a thread would be allowed.

Cashcrate

Basically, you join up, fill the info required (name, email, country, address*,etc), and start completing offers, which are mostly free. Some aren't, some are free from CashRate but the offer company charges (example: sometimes they're software offers and you buy the software) and some are paying. You can ignore the non-free ones, of course....

The quality of taste in females is directly proportional to the quantity and variety of females.

(So, when you have a limited number of females with little variety, you tend to conform)
