    Hello Tim & company,

I thought I'd register here and see what comes of it. I'm a jobbing gardener and retired philosophy blogger with too much time on his hands in the winter. An 'old' atheist I think.

I've brought a random quote from Seneca as a gift.

His eyes blaze and sparkle, his whole face is crimson with the blood that surges from the lowest depths of his heart; his lips quiver, his teeth are clenched, his hair bristles and stands on end; his breathing is forced and harsh. His joins crack from writhing; he groans and bellows, burst out into speech with scarcely intelligible words, strikes his hands together continually and stamps the ground with his feet; his whole body is excited and performs great angry threats. It is an ugly and horrible picture of distorted and swollen frenzy. You cannot tell whether this vice is more execrable or more hideous.

Be well and enjoy your travels - a message that applies to one and all.

    James

Hey Gurdur. Just wanted to let you know, I tried to upload some pictures into an album on my profile and after waiting for FOREVER for the page to load, I was redirected to a page with this message:

"Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing.

If this occurred unexpectedly, please inform the administrator and describe the action you performed before you received this error."

Just figured I'd let you know! Thanks!

You can make anything political, from cheese to pronouns. Whether you can do that in any worthwhile way is a different matter. An exchange on Twitter caught my eye, since it touched upon linguistics. The New York City Commission on Human Rights (NYCCHR) is demanding that employers, landlords, professionals and 'all businesses' in New York City ask people their preferred gender pronoun from their first interaction. It appears the NYCCHR is also prescribing what pronounds can be used; in other words,...

A long while ago, deprogramming was a real fad. People made their livings from offering it 'professionally', or from writing about it (both for and against), or from writing or politicking about the cause of the deprogramming fad, the rise of certain religious and quasi-religious cults. In response to that, and to a recent exchange on Twitter, what I offer here is a true story, and a cautionary one. All it will do is illustrate that life can be very complex, and that simple answers can be utterly...

I was interested in some recent tweets on the Vietnam War by @HeerJeet, who is Jeet Heer, a senior editor at the American New Republic. What interested me was the one-sided view of things. I hold that his worldview is a set of rather close-set blinders, so it's really up to me to justify that view of his own views. It would also be upfront to list what other claims I am making here (which I will then back up below in this post).
1) The view that Jeet Heer espouses of the Vietnam War is a

Just for fun, I did a Google Trends search for "science" versus "fiction". The results show worldwide that science as a search term is strongly cyclical, but declining over time since 2005. What to me is strange is how the results for the USA alone are very regular in cyclicity indeed. Interest in science dips to lowest every July, and peak every September and January. Not being in the USA, I have no idea why; I suspect science-project competitions or the like. Meanwhile, interest in fiction remains...

Salon won't help you understand rampage killings at all. What's worse, neither will Michael Kimmel, an American sociologist. Salon published an excerpt from his book, "Angry White Men: American Masculinity at the End of an Era". In that excerpt, he tells us all that:
Quote:
"Let’s be clear: just as we cannot understand rampage school shootings by focusing on the fact that they are always committed by boys, neither can we understand these cases simply by recognizing that they’re all men."
