Default Memory recall and toliet seats

First post here. I have seen this block of text quoted around the internet and on three different books about how memory in unreliable yet none of them cited where it came from and I was wondering if any of you have seen this before?

"A field study was once conducted by a journalist who fabricated a story about a naked woman, inhabitant of a small town, who got stuck to a freshly painted toilet seat. The journalist distributed the story through a newspaper wire service. On visiting the town and interviewing its citizens about the incident, the journalist found many who claimed to have witnessed or played part in it. There were refusals to accept the truth even after the true origin of the story was made public."

Without any other information, there's not much to work on. I've seen other examples of unreliable eyewitness testimony but to THIS extent, I don't believe it myself. Snopes did something on a very similar story. http://www.snopes.com/embarrass/doctor/framed.asp

Makes me wonder if "many who claimed to have witnessed or played part in it." is untrue and that what the journalist (if this isn't ALL made up) found was that people had heard this joke/story before and subconsciously thought "This is an odd event. This journalist is asking me about this odd event that I have heard of before. The thing I heard MUST be what he's asking me about."
