Default Volunteering

Do you volunteer? Donate time or money or items to a cause? If so, where and to what?

While I don't have much income, I try to offer small donation to a local animal shelter, Denver Dumb Friends League where I have adopted 3 dogs now. I spend some time helping out at the greyhound Meet and Greet for Recycled Racers. If a disaster occurs and local folks are collecting funds or items to help, I respond.

My biggest satisfaction and happiness comes from this: My homemake cleaner is from a small village in western Kenya where there are few or no schools. She is part of a local group which is collecting funds and things to buy land, build the school, and run it. It will be a boarding school for girls between her village and a neighboring one. When she told me how hard it was to get supplies there, I figured a half buck a week to buy pencils and such wouldn't hurt me. I watch for sales and get a bunch. Over there, they hand out one, yes one, pencil at a time! Since I'd been both a writer and a teacher, I did have a lot of stuff still around. I asked her about this and that. She was thrilled to be able to take away so many useful supplies as she told me it costs more to buy things there in the cities than it does here including shipping. Especially if things are donated! They already have bought the land and are working on getting construction started.

Granted, what I offer isn't much, but every little bit helps. This is why I pick carefully where I will spend money and time. To me, dogs and education are very important.

Sometime it takes keeping ears and eyes open for opportunities to help.

Now there's a great idea! That's the way to get more funds than you have available into helping others. Will you look into local charities or the national ones?

I donate to my local animal shelter, but frankly, what with work, I do not have the energy to give to a cause, most of the time. I'm lucky if I can write.
