Default Shopping via Phone

Up to now the most shopping I did by phone was with LLBean after I checked their catalog or online. So now a new experience.

Some months back my dishwasher groaned thru the whole cycle. I reckoned it was giving up the ghost so have been washing dishes by hands. Couple days ago I looked inside - YUK!!! Thought I'd use the rinse and hold cycle with baking soda to clean it out. No way. GRRRRR was all I got.

Yesterday I started to call around to find what was available so I wouldn't have to have a friend drive me all over. Called Home Depot, hold overlong, hung up. Called Lowe's, ditto. So I called Sears, got to product info right away. A very pleasant woman described what they had in the price range I asked for, described the machine. She gave me the price including that day's discount, the installation fee and such. I told her I'd get a ride and be over.

But she then told me I could actually order on the phone. A bit more discussion, I checked my available funds, and I did just that then and there. A dishwasher is not something I need to actually see and touch to decide. Heck, when you buy a house you take what's already in. The el cheapo one I have now lasted 14 1/2 years; while the super duper one in my last house didn't make 7!

Set up for installation tomorrow; they will call this eve to set up the time.

Glad that this year I did get that senior property tax half break! That gave me enough to do this with no sweat! Now if the legislators don't vote it out again for another 2 years, next year maybe I can replace my aging water heater!

DW installed. Enough dirty dishes this morn to run it. Amazing how quiet it is, so much more so than the old one ever was.

Mine is an older Whirlpool that was already here when I bought the place. I've been here 8 years, and it's still going strong. As far as shopping, you could also have ordered the thing from Sears online, and get to see pictures of it to boot.

I bought my TV set online, and have made other purchases that way as well. It's especially handy when I am looking for something that no one around here carries. Saves a lot of time wasted driving around town looking for something too.

Rarely do I buy online, but I sure do hunt around either that way or phone to find one place to get to so I don't have to have somebody drive me all over. Even when I still had a car, I'd do that, and plan trips to do a circuit instead of doing umpty trips on different days.

But for a DW I reckoned a DW is a DW so didn't need pix. And in such a big metro area the major box stores will probably have what I want in most lines, so I just need to figure out which one to go to.

Calling can be hit or miss as far as being able to get a salesperson on the phone to help you.

I do like initial "seeing what's out there" online. You can get a better feel for what your after from the comfort of your couch, then if needed go see the item in person.

Kind of nice, K-Mart and Wal-Mart (and probably other places) have a feature in their search that tells you if the item is in stock at your local store. Penny's will ship whatever you want to the local store for free. If you happen to be in American Eagle and they have an item in the store not in your size, if the store associate orders it for you online, shipping to your home is free. I can't say enough wonderful things about Amazon Prime. Free 2 day shipping which has been quite helpful with 2 kids in college. Also with local stores doing away with stocking so many things - I end up shopping online out of desperation.

I don't call anyone for anything unless I have to. I work at a call center, and as telephonophobic as I was prior to working at one, it's even worse now.

I shop online, and if I need a tactile experience, then I go check it out in the store if I can. The only time I actually call someone to order stuff is pizza, and that not always.

Thank heavens for Dominos and Pizza Hut and their online ordering!
