Default Cheap Car Insurance?!

My god, I cannot begin to stipulate just how insidiously expensive car insurance is for a [to be] 17 year old, I mean:

Toyota Supra '92: 8892 p.a
Fiat 126 '90: 2650 p.a

Yes, it's better; but, for a normal drivable car that I can afford in the first place is between 2 to 4 grand a year for car insurance for a 17 year old on gocompare.com which is why I require some assistance; would anyone know of a small car, pre '90 which comes out as cheap to buy, tax and insure?
I'm not talking of a modern econobox; of which I cannot abide by, and most cars from the mid nineties are either fugly or drive appallingly despite the nay-costly price tag.
I'm also considering two wheel, but until I can rough out pricing on a cage, this is how it's going.

I'm not much help, but I do sympathize.

Insurance I think is something with painful numbers of digits no matter how old you are.

Masses of no-claims bonuses. Add to that his '97 Primera is safe as houses and never once had a prang.

He's a grand-dad. You probably don't want to go that far, yet.

What ya expectin' Bennnington, a 'Hot Hatch'?

I hate to say it, but you might just have to 'suck it up'.

Save your dosh.

Buy a solid, second hand, cheapo, sensible 'econobox' from a reputable source. Get a knowledgeable, experienced mentor with you when you do it. Get them to hold your dosh and empower them to kick your arse if you are tempted in to an impulse buy of a pig.

Don't insure it in an older relatives name with you as a named driver. If it comes to light you were the main driver and you have a prang, it can invalidate your claim. Better to start building up your own no claims bonus right from the start.

Get fully comprehensive including legal cover if you can afford it. Third party fire and theft absolutely minimum. As soon as you can, insure your no claims bonus. If need be spend more on insurance than on the car. Tough I know, but dem are de breaks.

Drive it really well and carefully and build up your no claims bonus.

Getting an IAM or ROSPA advanced driving qualification under you belt is a bloody good idea. It is also fun. You will not only be safer, you will be a smoother and more progressive driver. Oh and your insurance will be cheaper.

So writes an old fart who has made a lot of mistakes with cars.

Lifelinking has the right of it. Insurance does get cheaper as you age but getting old is not all it's cracked up to be, so just pay up and appreciate your youth! If you decide to stay driving a parent's car, get them to insure with a company that recognises your being on the parent's policy for no claims bonus purposes. Mine does; I won't name them here but pm me if you want to know. They also pay up promptly and without hassle, at least their home division did when my house was wrecked by a burst pipe on Hogmanay.

Above all, as Life says, Drive it really well and carefully. After all, it's only a way of getting from A to B.
