Yes, this is indeed a very nasty step backwards for the UN.

Same group of nations that pushed for the UN to sponsor an anti-blasphemy law. No surprises here.

On a scale of 0-10, among historically useless organizations, the U.N. has got to be an 11.

Not wanting to derail this thread, but I would gently suggest that we get the UN we deserve. Commentators, very often from the USA, loves to denigrate the UN. But underneath the rhetoric the last thing the USA and other major powers would actually want would be a strong, decisive, restructured UN with teeth and bite. How would the USA and others then get away with riding roughshod over International Law, among other things?

It'll never happen because the US runs the whole UN show; it's all about political will/influence no matter what the powers that be say.

The U.N. is ineffective because it has no values held within its charter. From the beginning, the U.N. should have been created with the liberal democratic values of the West enshrined in its constitution. Then, when the West firmly held the balance of power in the post-war era, we could have leveraged that power. In order to be a part of the wider world, states would need to accept certain values la European Union style. I just took an International Relations course last semester with an ex-Oxford professor, so this stuff has been burned into my brain for the last four months.

Just as we ultimately end up with the government we deserve.

Your points are well taken and I am not happy about propping up a useless organization just so my leadership can give the impression they even care about anything more than exploiting what they can outside our borders.

I love my country, but I surely do not agree with much of what we do. I find myself in less agreement with each passing year.
